The justifications to be carried out on the service limit states are dealt with in chapter 7, where there are new developments concerning control of cracking.
Constructive provisions are the subjects of chapters 8 and 9, the first relating to reinforcement and the second to structural elements.
The last chapter, 10, brings together specific justification methods: verification relative to shear in special cases, the use of connecting rods and tie rods for zones of discontinuity, study of the prestress diffusion, ‘sandwich method’ for plate design and particularly the bending-shear combination. Foundations, treated in a very partial manner by Eurocode 2, should provide useful references for designers.
A second objective is trying to make the designer feel at home in this new voluminous entity full of multiple and diverse rules. Hence the reason for all this extra information, not only in Eurocode 2 itself, but also when it is necessary and thus useful to other Eurocodes.
And finally, the austere nature of such a work is inevitable. It is also accentuated by the very large number and diversity of the subjects treated. Further, a particular effort has been made to aim for simplicity and in the reasoning, or the logic in the linking of subjects, with the aim of providing a relative ease of reading. The guide will have succeeded in its aims if the designers quickly find it easy to use and practical, and if they refer to it often. This should not, however, excuse them from referring to Eurocode 2.

An Assessment of Repair and Strengthening Techniques for Brick and Stone Masonry Arch Bridges by D Ashurst
The problems and repair techniques studied were as follows: Problem: Arch ring with insufficient calculated capacity -- Repair techniques: reinforced concrete saddle; repointing; grouting; lining with sprayed concrete; prefabricated liner. Problem: Inadequate foundations -- Repair: mini-piles; underpinning with mass concrete; curtain walls may be combined with grouting and/or stitching of the piers or abutments; invert slabs. Problem: Outward movement of the spandrel walls - Repair: tie bars; and replacing some or all of the spandrel fill with concrete. The County Councils of England and Wales and the Regional Councils of Scotland were asked to provide examples of bridges which had been repaired using the techniques. A total of 180 examples were provided from which a sample of the fifty most suitable was identified for more detailed study. This report provides a useful guide to the effectiveness, the advantages and disadvantages, and the cost of the various repair and strengthening techniques available for masonry arch bridges

This report on Bridge Foundations and Substructures summarises the
findings of a survey of the attitudes of bridge designers in the United
Kingdom. The objective of the survey was to gain some idea of the
philosophies adopted by engineers in their choices of different types of
foundations and substructures and of different methods of analysis.
The report was also expected to highlight those areas where further
guidance and research are required, and where fInancial savings might be
effected.
The survey initially involved discussions during 1975/76 with about 120
experienced engineers within 46 organisations acknowledged below. During
1977 a considerable amount of additional advice and comment was added
as a result of detailed criticism of a preliminary draft by the Steering
Committee. The subsequent Draft Commentary on Current Practice in
Design of Bridge Foundations and Substructures was published by the
Building Research Establishment to stimulate public comment and it
formed the text for a Seminar held at the Building Research Station in
October 1977 attended by about 150 engineers. A considerable quantity of
further comment, advice and criticism was collected at the Seminar and
received in writing from bridge designers in the UK and abroad. This
information has also been incorporated in this report.
