Seismology is rated the Queen of Earth Sciences due to its ability to provide detailed structural information bearing on the Earth interior and on-going dynamic processes. This is due to the advanced theoretical foundation of seismology and the extensive cooperation among seismologists on recording and disseminating of data worldwide. In contrast, some 40 years ago seismology was a backward science and hence funding was poor.

This abruptly changed with the political interest in seismology as the principal tool for monitoring compliance with a potential Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban treaty (CTBT) banning nuclear testing in any environment.

Major countries like USA, UK and USSR launched large-scale research programs including deployment of modern seismograph stations and arrays and these developments are detailed in the book for CTBTO (UN), IRIS (USA), MedNet (Italy), Geofon (Germany) and the tiny Karelia network, NW Russia. Station and network operations require near real time record analysis and topics dealt with here are 2-D signal detector, epicenter location and earthquake monitoring. Balkan is seismically the most active part of Europe due to multiple plate interactions in the Aegean Sea. The tectonic evolution and on-going geodynamic deformations are described in 2 articles. Earthquake hazard analysis and topographic site effects are discussed and likewise large earthquake hazards in the Aegean and the Marmara seas relate to practical applications of such procedures. Foremost; the book gives a good account of past, present and likely future seismological developments in Balkan countries and various kinds of network operations on local to global scales.

Public review comments are welcome on any new revisions that have been made since the first public review draft. The first draft revisions are shown with tracking in the current public review draft. Please submit comments using the form provided online to Cynthia J. Duncan, AISC’s director of engineering (duncan@aisc.org) by October 19, 2015 for consideration.

The book contains descriptions of ground vibration measurements, predictions and control for engineers. Effects of most frequent sources of ground vibration arising from construction/demolition, traffic and machinery, ground wave amplification and attenuation as well as foundation kinematic and inertial interaction have been considered by simplified analyses aimed at ease and speed of use for major problems in ground vibration engineering. Comments on assumptions, limitations, and factors affecting the results are given. Case studies and examples worldwide are included to illustrate the accuracy and usefulness of simplified methods. This report summarizes part of a four year study on the feasibility and limitations of a small scale model studies in earthquake engineering and practice. The emphasis is placed on dynamic modeling theory, a study of mechanical properties of model materials, development of suitable model construction techniques and an evaluation of the accuracy of prototype response prediction through model case studies on components and simple structures. Steel and Reinforced concrete structures are considered in this study

During the last decade, the state of the art in Earthquake Engineering Design and Analysis has made significant steps towards a more rationale analysis of structures. Scientists have long recognized that earthquake design is guided by displacements and deformations rather than forces. However due to the historical background of structural engineers in static analyses, effects of earthquake on structures have been viewed as forces acting on the structures. All presently available design building codes are developed along these lines. Our knowledge of ground motion characteristics, earthquake geotechnical engineering, structural behaviour (design and numerical analyses) and model tests have advanced to a point where it is possible to anticipate a significant move from force based design approaches to displacements based design approaches. Although displacement based analyses constitute the kernel of most research programs, they have not yet been incorporated in the state of practice.

Near-Fault Seismic Ground Motions

Bridges that cross faults are subject to static deformation that occurs at almost the same time as the arrival of dynamic pulse-like ground motions. Static offsets can be as large as several centimeters to many meters and strong ground motion velocity pulses exceeding 100 cm/s have been observed. Near-fault records, in the distance range of 10 to 100s of meters from faults are essentially nonexistent except for a few cases and therefore numerical simulation of ground motions for such near-fault situations is necessary. The paper presents simulated ground motions to 17.5 Hz, 15-100m from the fault for a Mw6.5 earthquake using an elastic finite-difference code. Simulations for homogeneous earth structure are compared for uniform and heterogeneous fault rupture scenarios. To investigate asymmetry of ground motions on opposite sides of a dipping reverse fault the dislocation method of Okada (1992) is used to compute static offset. From those results a simplified procedure for the simulation of near-fault time histories is developed. All of the simulations assume linear elasticity, and it is noted that the computed strain is as high as 10-4 - 10-3, and it is likely that there would be significant non-linear behavior in this near-fault region.

Nikos D. Lagaros is an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Thessaly and Research Associate of the National Technical University of Athens. His research activity is focused in the area of the optimum design of structures under static and seismic loading conditions using evolutionary and hybrid optimization methods. The optimum design problem of real world problems with multiple objective functions has also been a subject of research using specially tailored genetic algorithms and evolution strategies. He has more than 120 publications including 37 refereed international journal papers. He is involved in the following scientific activities: Member of the editorial board of 5 international scientific journals. Reviewer in 9 scientific journals and 15 international conferences.

• Buildings whose seismic resistance is of importance in view of the consequences associated with a collapse, e.g. schools, assembly halls, cultural institutions, etc. (importance class III according to EN1998-1:2005)
• Industrial facilities, where secondary risks exist, e.g. the risk of release of toxic and/ or explosive materials
• Cultural heritage These structures must remain greatly undamaged and serviceable after an earthquake.
In order to achieve this goal a pre-earthquake phase involving investigations, structural analysis and safety assessment is required. The results of this activities provide the “state of consistence” of the structure and allow to plan and undertake measures for seismic upgrading in due time, if necessary. Normally the highest level of knowledge is necessary to afford safety assessments for such structures and it is attained by setting a detailed, often 3D, structural model, based on careful surveys and updated by using measured insitu dynamic properties. It is one of the basic ideas of SP5 to integrate experimental techniques into the assessment procedure, which is an advantage one has in the case of existing buildings

Landslides represent an increasing threat to European population, particularly when one takes into account the intensive urbanisation and land use trend that is currently observed in Europe. This risk is a public safety issue that requires appropriate mitigation measures and means to protect citizens, property, infrastructure and the built cultural heritage. Mitigating this risk requires integrated and coordinated actions involving a wide range of organisations and disciplines. For this reason, the LESSLOSS Integrated Project has embraced a large number of European Centres of excellence in earthquake and geotechnical engineering, integrating in the traditional fields of engineers and earth scientists some expertise of social scientists, economists, urban planners, information technologists.
This volume reports some results of the activities carried out within the four LESSLOSS sub-projects that were focused on landslides. These activities were conducted within the LESSLOSS Integrated Project within a collaborative effort that allowed to cover a wide spectrum of topics related to landslides. The exceptionality of the LESSLOSS Project has consisted in the co-presence of research groups with markedly different backgrounds. This allowed a multidisciplinary effort and a contamination of traditional approaches with experiences derived from different fields.
The volume has been thought as a tool for researchers and practitioners who wants to be updated on available models and techniques and to read about difficulties, advantages and disadvantages in using specific studying techniques.
The presented contributions include examples relative to: in situ and remote monitoring of displacements and hydrologic variables, landslide mapping and development of GIS geodatabases, susceptibility and hazard assessment, model validation approaches, numerical modelling, loss evaluation and risk analysis by deterministic and probabilistic models, stabilization methods. All the applications make reference to specific case studies coming from European and non European countries. For reasons of space we maintained all the contributions into a limited number of pages but trying always to guarantee the general understanding. Therefore, the reader can find in the text the essential information about these case studies together with all the most relevant references.
The list of authors is reported at the beginning of each chapter. For sake of simplicity, the affiliation of the authors is expressed using conventional acronyms that refer to the LESSLOSS partners involved into the report.

Guidelines for Seismic Vulnerability Reduction in the Urban Environment

This report deals with the reduction of the seismic vulnerability of buildings and infrastructures. This can correspond to very different interventions, as there are many types of structures, many materials and many ways to reduce vulnerability. This explains that a variety of topics is treated.
The first chapter deals with the screening of buildings on an urban scale to identify which need retrofitting. In the second chapter, conventional methods for retrofitting are described.
In all the following chapters, new techniques for retrofitting are presented. The application of Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRP) on existing structures is a technique which has developed a lot recently. The content of Chapter three is related to the design of FRP solutions: a user friendly design tool, experimental data on durability and fatigue and a design method considering the contribution of steel rebars and FRP to resistance. An effective numerical model for composite is presented. Chapter three also describes experimental studies on masonry infill which FRP can effectively reinforce against transverse move and for their in-plane strength. Rehabilitation using that technique can be applied at an urban scale. The use of dissipative devices to reduce the vulnerability of structures is the subject of Chapter four. The technique is applied to precast concrete portal frames and to steel frames with concentric bracings. The use of base isolation for seismic upgrading of historical buildings is developed in Chapter five, in which a displacement - based method is applied to a light house. The mitigation of hammering between buildings, with a methodology to face various situations, is the subject of Chapter six. A displacement based methodology of analysis for underground structures in soft soils is presented at Chapter seven. This Report focuses on practical applications rather than on theory.

Ground-motion prediction equations, 1964–2010

This report summarizes all empirical ground-motion prediction equations (GMPEs), to estimate earthquake peak ground acceleration (PGA) and elastic response spectral ordinates, published between 1964 and 2010 (inclusive). This report replaces: the Imperial College London report of Douglas (2004a), which provided a summary of all GMPEs from 1964 until the end of 2003; the BRGM report of Douglas (2006), which summarized all GMPEs from 2004 to 2006 (plus some earlier models); and the report of Douglas (2008), concerning GMPEs published in 2007 and 2008 (plus some earlier models). In addition, this report lists published
GMPEs derived from simulations, although details are not given since the focus here is on empirical models. Studies that only present graphs are only listed as are those nonparametric formulations that provide predictions for different combinations of distance and magnitude because these are more difficult to use for seismic hazard analysis than those which give a single formula. Equations for single earthquakes or for earthquakes of approximately the same size are excluded due to their limited usefulness. Those relations based on conversions from macroseismic intensity are only listed.
This report was compiled as part of Task 2 (Compilation of list of candidate GMPEs) of the Global Component on GMPEs coordinated by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) for the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) and Workpackage 4 (Strong ground motion modeling) of the Seismic Hazard Harmonization in Europe (SHARE) project of the
Seven Framework Programme of the European Commission (grant agreement no. 226769).
This report summarizes, in total, the characteristics of 289 empirical GMPEs for the prediction of PGA and 188 empirical models for the prediction of elastic response spectral ordinates.

In addition, many dozens of simulation-based models to estimate PGA and elastic response spectral ordinates are listed but no details are given.

It should be noted that the size of this report means that it may contain some errors or omissions. No discussion of the merits, ranges of applicability or limitations of any of the relationships is included herein except those mentioned by the authors or inherent in the data used. This report is not a critical review of the models. The GMPEs are generally reported in the form used in the original references.

Mechanical Behavior of Multi-Spherical Sliding Bearings

This report describes the principles of operation and the development of cyclic force-displacement relationships for three variations of multi-spherical sliding bearings: the double FP bearing, the triple FP bearing, and the modified single FP bearing. The force-displacement relationships of devices with increasingly complex behavior were determined by extending the fundamental principles of operation that apply to sliding on a single concave surface. It was shown that each device is capable of exhibiting displacement dependent adaptive behavior, i.e., desirable changes in stiffness and damping over the course of motion. These changes are determined by the relative values of each surface’s coefficient of friction, effective radius of curvature, and displacement capacity. Since all are predefined design parameters (aside from the inherent uncertainty and variability in the coefficient of friction), their behavior is completely controllable by the engineer. In addition, it was shown that in cases where multiple surfaces are of equal friction, the complexity of behavior exhibited by these devices is reduced. This is important because bearings of smaller plan dimension can still use familiar and proven methods of analysis and design, resulting in significant cost savings. A future report will detail the development, experimental verification and application of tools for dynamic analysis of structures isolated with these bearings.

Thus in reviewing the literature each phase will be treated separately and will be considered in sequential stages as; identification and explanation of the process, compilation of the relevant and needed databases , analysis and interpretation of the acquired databases. The investigations and suggestions encountered in the literature are reviewed with the perspective of mainly offering the scientist and engineers in Turkey information concerning all the stages of seismic microzonation. Therefore the necessary steps in each and all seismic microzonation components will be considered in terms of consecutive stages as; quantification of earthquake ground motion, determination of the necessary geological and geotechnical site conditions, analyses of the available data, engineering interpretation of the results obtained. The findings and proposals related to all these stages will be reviewed briefly to give the reader a complete understanding of the whole process

Microzonation has to be performed in municipalities with more than
30,000 inhabitants.
The purpose of the Seismic Microzonation Manual is to illustrate a microzonation
methodology developed for Turkey.
Microzonation is an efficient tool to mitigate the earthquake risk by
hazard-related land use management. Microzonation does not replace
the existing Turkish building and construction codes.
This manual has different purposes for specific Turkish authorities, public
and private enterprises:
- It should advise the responsible government agencies on how to
review and evaluate microzonation studies in Turkey performed by
private or public enterprises;
- It should inform municipal authorities about the required inputs for
and outputs from a microzonation project;
- It should define technical recommendations for private or public
companies commissioned with the execution of a microzonation
project.

This manual consists of three chapters:
- Chapter 1 is directed to the general audience (approving agency,
municipalities, commissioned enterprise, public). It gives general
definitions of terms used in this document and characterizes earthquake
effects to be taken into account when performing a microzonation
project. It also describes in general the microzonation
method developed, its relation to the Turkish Building Code, the
investigations needed to perform such a microzonation and how to
interpret the different microzonation maps in order to develop corresponding
building regulations;
- Chapter 2 is mainly directed to the enterprise commissioned to perform
the microzonation study. It gives practical and technical
guidelines as well as recommendations to perform the microzonation
method described in Chapter 1 efficiently;
- Chapter 3 describes the tasks and responsibilities of the municipalities
commissioning microzonation studies and implementing the
results of these studies into their land use management system.

The book is divided into four parts. Part I considers tsunami as a known hazard, starting in Chapter 1 with legends and stories and questioning whether they are scientific fact or legend. Dr Bryant looks at the causes of tsunami, their distribution and fatalities in the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas, the Pacific Ocean, New Zealand and Australia as well as in bays, fjords, inland seas and lakes. Chapter 2 studies the dynamics of tsunami, their characteristics, the wave theory and the run-up and inundation. In Part II tsunami-formed landscapes are examined, showing both the depositional and erosional signatures of tsunami in the coastal landscape, including chevrons and dune bedforms. The coastal landscape evolution is looked at in Chapter 4, comparing catastrophism against uniformitarianism and tsunami versus storms. Examples and types of coastal landscapes created by tsunami, particularly in Australia, Grand Cayman, the Bahamas and Chilean coast are also given. Part III looks at the main causes of tsunami: earthquakes, great landslides, volcanic eruptions and comets and meteorites. The modern risk of tsunami is covered in Part IV, detailing locations and avoidance, including warning systems. Dr Bryant ends this unique study of a fascinating subject with five stories of different tsunamis.

This document is the initial volume in the three-volume 2006 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual. It has been developed by the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) with funding provided by SEAOC. Its purpose is to provide guidance on the interpretation and use of the seismic requirements in the 2006 International Building Code (IBC), published by the International Code Council, Inc., and SEAOC's 2005 Recommended Lateral Force Requirements and Commentary (also called the Blue Book).

The 2006 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual was developed to fill a void that exists between the commentary of the Blue Book, which explains the basis for the code provisions, and everyday structural engineering design practice. The 2006 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual illustrates how the provisions of the code are used. Volume I: Code Application Examples, provides step-by-step examples for using individual code provisions, such as computing base shear or building period. Volumes II and III: Building Design Examples furnish examples of seismic design of common types of buildings. In Volumes II and III, important aspects of whole buildings are designed to show, calculation-by-calculation, how the various seismic requirements of the code are implemented in a realistic design.

The examples in the 2006 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual do not necessarily illustrate the only appropriate methods of design and analysis. Proper engineering judgment should always be exercised when applying these examples to real projects. The 2006 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual is not meant to establish a minimum standard of care but, instead, presents reasonable approaches to solving problems typically encountered in structural/seismic design.

The example problem numbers used in the prior Seismic Design Manual - 2000 IBC Volume I code application problems have been retained herein to provide easy reference to compare revised code requirements.

From the Introduction
Volume I of the 2006 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual: Code Application Examples deals with interpretation and use of the structural/seismic provisions of the 2006 International Building Code (IBC). The 2006 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual is intended to help the reader understand and correctly use the IBC structural/seismic provisions and to provide clear, concise, and graphic guidance on the application of specific provisions of the code. It primarily addresses the major structural/seismic provisions of the IBC, with interpretation of specific provisions and examples highlighting their proper application.

The 2006 IBC has had structural provisions removed from its text and has reference several national standards documents for structural design provisions. The primary references document is ASCE/SEI 7-05, which contains the Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures. ASCE/SEI 7-05 is referenced for load and deformation design demands on structural elements, National Material design standards (such as ACI, AISC, MSJC and NDS) are then referenced to take the structural load demands from ASCE/SEI 7-05 and perform specific material designs.

Volume I presents 58 examples that illustrate the application of specific structural/seismic provisions of the IBC. Each example is a separate problem, or group of problems, and deals primarily with a single code provision. Each example begins with a description of the problem to be solved and a statement of given information. The problem is solved through the normal sequence of steps, each of which is illustrated in full. Appropriate code references for each step are identified in the right-hand margin of the page.

The complete 2006 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual will have three volumes, Volumes II and III will provide a series of structural/seismic design examples for buildings illustrating the seismic design of key parts of common building types such as a large three-story wood frame building, a tilt-up warehouse, a braced steel frame building, and a concrete shear wall building.

While the 2006 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual is based on the 2006 IBC, there are some provisions of SEAOC's 2005 Recommended Lateral Force Provisions and Commentary (Blue Book) that are applicable. When differences between the IBC and Blue Book are significant they are brought to the attention of the reader.

The 2006 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual is intended to be used by practicing structural engineers and structural designers, building departments, other plan review agencies, and structural engineering students.

Summary: Good book, but not very difficult
Rating: 4

Having taken the exam several times, I have an idea about how the problems on the exam look. This is a good book for learning the concepts, but the problems on the exam are more difficult and trickier. Expect to see all kinds of live loads for warehouses or partition loads in the seismic load and factors from load combinations as well as problems with non-building structures and mechanical equipment. The book covers these subjects but not very thoroughly
