General Discussion of Factors:

Importance Factor:

The importance factor is an assignment of a safety factor based on the risk to personnel or importance of the structure. Structures with large numbers of personnel or structures required for emergencies will have a higher importance safety factor than low risk structures. A school will have a higher importance factor than a warehouse.

Exposure Factor:

The exposure factor, A, B, C etc.. describes the general area wind affect. Areas in the open will have a larger wind affect. The higher the wind affect, the less the snow accumulation. The sub categories of fully exposed, partially exposed and sheltered help to fine tune the exposure of the structure. A sheltered structure in a high wind area will have greater snow accumulation than a fully exposed structure in the same area.

Thermal Conditions:

The conditions of warm or cold roof, roof slope and roof surface affect the snow accumulation. A warm roof with a slippery surface will tend to allow the snow to slide off, thus reducing the snow load.

Drifts:

Drifts are dependent on ground snow load, wind direction, length of the structure and height of the wall that supports the drift. Block terrain features can also reduce drift height, depending on their distance to the subject roof.
